American Horror Story Red Tide is Terrible
American Horror Story season 10 is split into two mini seasons. Red Tide is episodes 1–6 of season 10. For this reason, I will only be going over Red Tide (NOT Death Valley). Spoiler alert for those who have not yet seen this season.
I will preface this by saying that overall I have been a long term fan of American Horror Story. Frankly, however, as much as I love the show, I feel like it’s been in a slow decline since season 6 (in order — Roanoke, Cult, Apocalypse, 1984, Double Feature). Personally, I feel that Red Tide was a very bad season.
For starters, this mini-series was only six episodes long. That does not leave a lot of room for a complete series and new characters to develop. Some shows have been successfully done with so few episodes in a season, but the writing must be superb (on top of great acting and everything else that goes into making a great TV show).
The family dynamics were very unsettling. The mother character is passed off as a “poor interior designer”, all the characters heavily implying that she will never get great talent. The father character takes a pill to “bring out his true talent” and the daughter (who is a good violinist, but also only eight years old at the beginning of the series)…
