A delightfully disastrous game from 2019

Ah, Anthem. So ambitious, but ultimately shot itself in the foot. I played Anthem for a handful of hours and sat on the couch and watched my good friends complete the story mode. This game unfortunately was more or less doomed from the beginning upon release. Many fans when they first heard about Anthem excitedly pre-orded it, thinking how wrong could the makers of Mass Effect go? Well, turns out pretty bad.

For starters, the game had less than a year’s worth of genuine development. The game was put through developmental Hell with behind-the-scenes crew regularly changing like a revolving door. Every time they got a new head, the desire for the direction of the game (and everything else that goes into creating a comprehensive story for the game) drastically changed. Left with a handful of months to release to the public, upon release, we got a story that was being held together by the thinnest of threads. The sad thing is, a lot of fans could see the seeds of potential for this bare-bones foundation they set up, but it was ultimately squandered.

Gameplay-wise, it was your standard shooter game. There were four characters “types” you could choose from. Each of these four specialized in a different aspect of the bot you were strapped inside (agility vs tank for example)…
