Growing up, I had heard of multiple people in the same relationship. However, as a young teenager (I’m 29 as of February 2023, publishing this article) I always saw myself as not being able to handle that. I saw myself as too insecure and too jealous. Well, a lot can change over fifteen years.

The first attempt at polyamory was with my abusive ex-boyfriend. He knew I always liked the idea of a girlfriend and opened up the idea of opening up the relationship. However, from almost day one, it became evident he was into unicorn hunting (wanting a woman for us to mutually date as a couple rather than individually). On top of that fact, he had a huge fetish for seeing two women having sex (between the porn he watched when I happened to glance over his shoulder as well as how he spoke about the subject matter). As I became more aware of the polyamory community (how to ethically have a non-monogamous relationship, “the ethical slut” is a great book for those brand new to the world of non-monogamy) I saw just how toxic his approach and mentality were.
