Polyamory is in
As a person who has embraced being non-monogamous, I have to tell you, it is so frustrating trying to browse the internet for these kinds of topics without stumbling on the kinksters, fetishists, and/or random strangers constantly accusing people that “polyamorous is just cheating for losers!” (or some variation of this). I am saying this as a person who indulges in many different types of kinks and fetishes.
The idea that “couples can only be two people” really started with the influence of large churches. Scientifically speaking, it is fascinating to see why some people are naturally more inclined to only one partner as opposed to potentially more than one. It effectively boils down to: what culture you grow up in, the household values you grow up with, as well as what your genetic makeup is. It is theorized that people (before the growing influence of religion) started to pair up with only one mate to help reduce the risk of possible transference of STDs/STIs, but this is frankly still hotly debated on why, at least from a historical perspective, why exactly did humans start pairing off with one mate as opposed to potentially many.
