I am a Russian Romani. One of my friends found a “gypsy makeup” link (hint — gypsy is considered a racist slur to many Romani) which, upon review, is frankly a terrible article. It makes the Romani sound more like a fantasy Dungeons and Dragons character archetype. We are real people who have suffered real hardship. I am going to break down piece by piece why this article did frankly a horrible job. Parts from the article will be in block quotes (have a verticle line to the viewer left side of the text) to make it clear what comes from the article that is being referenced.

Gypsies have magical powers, so does makeup. And when we blend the two, we get surprising results. Gypsy makeup is something that has been trending for the last few years for special occasions like Halloween.

We do not have magical powers. The Romani got a sense of “mystical” to them because of foreigners romanticizing them. When the camera became mobile, wealthy Europeans commissioned photographers to wander the lands and take photos of anything that looked “foreign” or “interesting”. The Romani were photographed…
