I think it’s fair to say the globe has been nervously watching the news these past few weeks with the mounting tensions between Russia and Ukraine. There have been a few “episodes” of Russia and Ukraine having mounting tensions between each other during the past few years, but ultimately one or the other ultimately withdraws. Now, that is not the case. Ukraine has been documented by numerous journalists to have suffered attacks from Russia (February 2022).

Social media’s response has been frustrating, to say the least. Between people actually trying to spread awareness of what’s actively going on at the bombing sites (Twitter, TikTok live streams, Facebook posts, etc.), they have been grossly (many definitions apply here) outnumbered by those sharing memes about the event and/or telling gallows humor relating to the events.

It has gotten so bad in some circles online that people have vocally stated how “meme culture is destroying our perceptions of real-life tragedies”.
