Soul, Saw, Cancer

Soul has been a huge hit on Disney+!

I recently got through watching Disney-Pixar’s new movie, Soul. I will not give any spoilers, but a core theme of the movie was to “find what makes life meaningful” for one’s self. As a cancer survivor, I felt a rather unique connection to it. It also got me thinking about a horror movie that had a similar underlying message to it.

Soul’s focus is on helping the protagonists find that certain spark that makes people happy to get up every morning and live their life. For most adults, we get so caught up in the business of our everyday life, that we refuse to literally stop and smell the roses or watch a pretty butterfly fly through the air. Soul has a rather beautiful scene in it that makes one of the protagonists really stop and appreciate this.

Other cancer survivors can probably really appreciate this kind of scene. I know for myself, I have a distinct memory of when I was starting to go through the process of being diagnosed. This memory involves me walking out of the local grocery store and stopping before I crossed the street. I saw a bird just being a bird (pecking at the ground, looking around, etc.). For whatever reason, I found myself just staring, being mesmerized. I felt a tear run down my face. I felt like I was seeing the beauty of life for the first time all over again. This leads me to the horror movie connection.
