Stop Using Adoptees

Adoptees are not and never will be the “ace card” for pro life or pro choice people

I am speaking as an adopted person with a uterus — for the love of all things holy, stop using adoptees and the foster care system as your “trump card” when it comes to anything remotely related to abortion.

Adoptees (those adopted out of orphanages, hospitals, foster care, etc.) are often erased. Everyone wants to see and tell the “happy” stories of adoption (95% of the time from the adoptive parents perspective, almost always excluding the story of the biological parents and the adopted child). Even the scientific literature is overall scant when compared to studies on biological children of their own parents.

From the small amount of studies that do exist on us adoptees — we are dramatically more likely to experience some kind of severe mental health trouble (self harm, suicidal ideation and/or intention, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, dependency disorders, substance abuse, dissociation related disorders, and/or trauma disorders are the most common ones) when compared to our non-adopted peers (when controlling for all other factors in said studies). We are more likely to engage in reckless activities (be it sexual or otherwise). We are more likely to go through an identity crisis, especially if we are transracial…
