The Menu can be best described as a horror avant-garde satirical movie about the restaurant industry

I just finished watching The Menu (currently can be found on HBO Max and other areas online). The movie can best be described (at least in my view) as a “horror, avant-garde, satirical movie” about the restaurant industry. For myself, the general themes and motifs are extremely similar to Mother! (2017) and The Neon Demon (2016).

Before going any further — I will do my best to keep this review spoiler free. On top of that, this movie does depict 2 graphic depictions of suicide. There is one drowning and stabbing scene as well. So proceed with caution if you are considering watching this movie but are sensitive to movies depicting these acts.

We have a cast of characters who are the guests of this very high-end restaurant, all deliberately chosen because the head chef of the restaurant has a sharp distaste for what they represent in society (food critics who suck the humanity out of food, the people who go to high-end restaurants just for bragging rights, people who obsess over every little microscopic detail of food, etc.). The supporting cast (between the cooks in the kitchen and the actors for the guests who come to the restaurant) is all excellently chosen. The behind-the-scenes specifically mentions they were extremely careful about who they chose to be actors in this film because they wanted to provide humor, but not…
