The Suicide Squad (2021) Review
I’ve seen many of the recent slew of DC movies. Comic books-wise, I’ve always been a “regular fan” (not super into, not super against) of DC comics (as well as Marvel). However, DC’s live-action movies have frankly suffered, especially for casual comic book consumers. Personally, while I enjoy something like The Dark Knight, DC has had a nasty habit of getting bogged down in stuff that either distracts from the movie, the lighting is dark for the sake of dark (regardless if it’s day or night in the movie), and/or large sections of the movie that just add time to the movie (I’m still fully convinced you can remove anywhere from 25–50% of The Dark Knight script and still enjoy the movie).
I recently got around to watching the newest Suicide Squad movie by James Gunn. I’ll tell you this much — this movie was a much-needed breath of fresh air to the DC movies. The movie felt fresh, the dialogue was fun (but not overly campy or “jokes for the sake of jokes”), and we saw an interesting mesh of characters within the movie (pretty sure this is Polka Dot man’s biggest moment since who knows how long ago). It was nice to see Starro as well (with my fingers crossed we will see its offspring, Jarro, in a movie or spin-off series since it’s the cutest Robin character).
