Note: This list is in no particular order and includes games that I have personally played. If your favorite horror game is not on this list it’s possible that — I have not played it, and/or I just didn’t take particular interest in it.

I have always loved the horror genre and wanted to take a moment to list off some of my personal favorite horror games and why I love them. Again, as stated in the note above, this is not in any particular order (best to worst, worst to best, etc.).

  1. Until Dawn (2015)

Until Dawn is a cinematically beautiful game. Filled with quick time events with some jump scares (but not an overreliance on them), this game takes the idea of the “butterfly effect” (whatever you do has the potential to massively influence future events in the game) to the extreme. This is also one of the few horror games where everyone has the potential to die, or the potential to live. The frights are fantastic and the soundtrack is beautiful. Also, according to behind-the-scenes, they tracked players’ heart rates while playing sections of the game while in development to see how they could up their fright during specific moments in the game.
